Advocates of Hope: Raising Cancer
Awareness in the Business Community was launched in 2005 in
response to Delaware’s cancer rates and their impact on
employers and the workplace. The goal of the State Chamber’s
cancer awareness initiative is to deliver information about
cancer, prevention and available resources to Delaware employers
and their employees.
Here’s why the message is so
important:

The American Cancer Society projected that more than 4,500
Delawareans would be diagnosed with cancer in 2007.

80 percent of employees diagnosed with cancer will return to
work.
·
•
60 percent juggle treatment and work.
·
•
Ultimately, medical costs for employees with cancer are five
times higher than for those without.
·
• On the positive
side, there are more than 440 resources in Delaware that can
help business owners and their employees ease the cancer burden
and reduce cancer risks.
“Our goal is to provide business
owners and their employees with invaluable resources – and most
of all hope – for those facing a cancer diagnosis. We want to
help employers, their employees, co-workers and family members
meet the challenge of this disease,” says State Chamber
President James A. Wolfe.
Plans are currently underway for a
statewide cancer awareness summit scheduled for October 16,

The Delaware State Chamber of
Commerce started the Advocates of Hope Fund at the Delaware
Community Foundation in 2007. Donations to this fund are tax
deductible and were used to support the 2007 Advocates of Hope
Lecture Series and underwrite and promote further cancer
awareness in the business community. Contributions can be sent
